Christine Wrest-Smith

Christine works as a full time artist and tutor. In 2006 she completed her Honours Degree at Monash University. She regularly enters the Archibald prize and Doug Moran Portrait prize. She works in a range of media including charcoal, watercolour and oil paint.

Earlier this year she was Artist in Residence at Montsalvat and continued work on her Habitat Project which is the exploration of the process of construction of shelter and personal territory in the form of birds nests.

Each nest is a combination of both strength and fragility. The work evokes the process of construction through the media of paint or charcoal. Each individual ‘Habitat’ is a revelation of the character of its creator and draws parallels with artistic expression. What began as construction by one being has now become an expression through the process of construction by another.
