Ian Banksmith

Ian is an innovative contemporary painter who resides in Carnegie and works from his purpose built studio. He has exhibited extensively in Australia and the U.S.A, predominantly New York City, where private collectors have acquired his work.

Ian has experimented, developed and refined his style over the years to progress to his current work, ‘the sculptural relief’. In March 2008, Ian had a thirty-year retrospective in Melbourne, consisting of 39 works. Following this, he combined elements from his earlier work and merged this with other developed styles. Later in 2008 Ian went to France and Italy to refresh his views and method of creating art, purposely seeking artworks in the ‘relief’ style.

Ian’s current work incorporates flattened organic shapes, bold colour and the hard edge style of his earlier work. The biomorphic abstracted timber cut-outs are painted and positioned to form a sculptural relief.
