For more than seven years Tom has been creating vessels and sculptures in wood. During this time he developed his individual style for carved and decorated bowls, which he now applies to his sculptural works. It can be categorised as ‘abstract-organic’ and is dominated by aesthetic forms and sensual curves. Hand-polished surfaces highlight the beauty of colours and grain patterns in timbers. For the past two years Tom has focused only on sculptural work. He feels strongly influenced by Brancusi and Moore.
Tom favours a working technique called ‘direct carving’, which neglects the extensive preparation of detailed sketches and models. It allows him to have an intimate ‘communication’ with the selected piece of wood to find and unveil its individual beauty.
Tom was awarded Best Carving at the 2004 Winterfest Warburton, and the Acquisition for the Exchange Exhibition of Woodsculpture, Miaoli, Taiwan in 2005. He has also been published in American Woodturner, Wintered. 2005.
